An interview with Ruby, an amazing community eco champion

A Good Thing has an amazing network of volunteers who spread the word about our work by using their communication and digital marketing skills to engage charities and businesses. This month we catch up with Ruby to hear about her successes which includes signing up a business who went on to create a fantastic national offer on the app.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

My name is Ruby, I’m a 22 year old English Literature graduate from the University of Bristol. I’m passionate about protecting the environment and am pursuing a career in the charity sector.

Why did you choose to volunteer with A Good Thing?

I chose to volunteer with A Good Thing because I believe in the importance of their mission. So many things go to waste every year despite there being people in desperate need of the very things that are being thrown away, just like A Good Thing, I’d like to see that stop. By volunteering with A Good Thing I hope to help the charity grow and therefore help put a stop to the needless waste of so many things.

What’s your role as part of the volunteering programme?

My role as part of the volunteering programme is that of communications volunteer. The aim is for me to reach out to companies in the hopes of getting them to sign up to A Good Thing and then donate their unwanted items to charities in need.

What do you hope to learn from your volunteering experience?

I hope to learn more about what it takes to work for a charity. I’m also hopeful that this position will improve my communication skills and teach me the most effective ways of building relationships with companies.

Tell us about a success you’ve had in the role so far:

My biggest success so far has been getting Adnams to sign up to A Good Thing. They’re a fairly big company so it was amazing to be able to get through to them to have a conversation about A Good Thing and its mission. It was even more amazing to hear such positive feedback, and subsequently have them sign up and post a donation to the site! As if that wasn’t enough they’ve also said they’d like to promote A Good Thing. Overall it was so rewarding to be able to help A Good Thing grow!

Thank you Ruby for being an amazing volunteer!
