One year on: a donation of notebooks and the wellbeing of people in hospital

A Good Thing is an online platform that allows businesses to give things away to their local charities. Less to landfill, more to a good cause! The case study below is an example of the wonderful impact that can be made through these matches.

Donor: Juniper Trading
Charity that benefited: The Lewis Foundation
Sector: branded merchandise
Location: Northamptonshire
What was donated? 500 A5 notebooks

In November 2024, the promotional merchandise company Juniper Trading donated 2,000 notebooks via the A Good Thing platform. This donation was part of the company’s wider mission to conduct its business sustainably.

In practice, this looks like:

  • using sustainable material options

  • recycling offcuts to make smaller products

  • using energy from 100%-renewable resources

  • actively managing waste (in 2021, less than 7% of Juniper Trading’s waste went to landfill).

Alongside the reduction in waste, we wanted to find out what impact the donation of notebooks via the A Good Thing platform had had on charities, one year on. We reached out to one of the recipient charities - The Lewis Foundation, to find out.

Supporting those in need

The Lewis Foundation is a charity that supports people with cancer in hospital, by delivering free care packages containing items that people may find difficult to obtain or afford. The Lewis Foundation started by delivering 80 gift packages a month to one hospital, and it now delivers over 2,500 gifts to 17 hospitals across the Midlands each month. Alongside the thoughtful packages, the volunteers who deliver them are a regular friendly face for people who may be feeling very isolated while in hospital.

An impactful gift

In November 2024, The Lewis Foundation received a donation of colourful A5 notebooks from Juniper Trading. We caught up with Lorraine Lewis, CEO of The Lewis Foundation, to find out about the impact of these notebooks:

“We received a wonderful donation of journal books that have now gone into our hospital gift packs for adults diagnosed with cancer. Something as simple as a journal can have such a powerful impact: for many patients, writing helps them process their thoughts, track their journey, or simply find a moment of calm in between treatments or hospital stays. It’s a space for hope, reflection and strength – something truly personal that belongs just to them.”

The Lewis Foundation offers patients the opportunity to pick gifts from a list of 29 different packs. The gift packs remain free to recipients, because of donated products through charity fundraising. Lorraine told us:

“Thanks to this thoughtful donation from Juniper Trading, we’ve been able to include these journals in our packs, giving patients the chance to express themselves and take a little time for self-care during such a difficult period. Donations like this remind us that every item – big or small – can make a difference. It’s not just about the gift itself, but the message it carries: you are not alone, and someone cares.”

It’s so heartening to hear how the donation of notebooks has made a meaningful difference to those navigating a difficult time in hospital.
