Moving office? Skip the commercial removal options and donate to charity!

If your company is about to move office, why not consider signing up to A Good Thing – it takes under a minute to join, it’s cheaper than commercial removal companies or hiring a skip, and you’re donating to charity.

If you look up the average cost to hire a commercial skip, you’re likely to come across quotes running into the thousands of pounds. At A Good Thing, a business can currently list up to three items free per month, pay £29 for unlimited donations for one month… or for £490 your firm can list as many items as you’d like for a whole year. Plus we’ll throw in some lovely publicity around your engagement!

When you upload items to our platform, we help you connect with charities that can benefit from your unwanted ‘stuff’. It’s also worth noting that A Good Thing is a not-for-profit: we’re almost entirely volunteer-run and the money we make goes back into continuing to run (and upgrade) the platform.

Making the most of a move

An organisation that decided to use A Good Thing during an office relocation recently is Urenco, based outside Slough in Berkshire. The team at Urenco has listed hundreds and hundreds of items over the last few months, which have been matched with well over 50 charities. The impact made is just breathtaking.

Rosie Salkeld, Social Impact Lead at Urenco, explained:

“Sustainability and social impact are key values for us, and so we were keen to find a way to help others and in particular support the community in the local area. We’re still linking with charities for some final items, but have been delighted with the way we have been able to connect with good causes via the A Good Thing website.”

Heaps of help

We’ve highlighted five of the successful matches below, enabled by the generous donations from Urenco.

yellow safety barriers for road

Yellow foldout safety barriers went to the London & Slough Run homelessness charity, which distributes items such as food, drink, clothing, bedding and toiletries to people in need in London and Slough.

The team requested the items, saying: “We need to put up temporary barriers when we’re delivering to the soup kitchens and foodbanks.” The charity receives no government funding and is staffed entirely by volunteers, so this donation will be a great help.

A binding machine went to the Princes Risborough Centre charity, working with older people, who said: “We would love this item to form memory books/files for our clients.”

Four comfortable yellow armchairs went to Brighter Futures Together: they will be used to help create a calming, neuroinclusive space in the charity’s youth centre. Several projects take place in this centre, including a dedicated group for neurodivergent young people aged 10–16. The impact of the new chairs will be huge:

“The chairs [will] form part of a quiet, low-stimulation area that supports young people who may feel overwhelmed or need time out. It will also be a great space for gentle one-to-one chats or wellbeing check-ins, helping us to create an environment that feels safe, welcoming and youth-friendly.”

Stylish wooden room dividers and wall clocks went to the Slough West Indian People’s Enterprise (SWIPE), who said: “These items would be an ideal addition to our new community training café at the Jubilee Riverside Centre in Slough, as well as our main building. This café is part of a wider initiative to provide vocational training and life skills to individuals with learning disabilities, helping them gain confidence and experience in a supportive, real-world environment.”

Noticeboards went to Wild Mind Wellbeing, who said: “We desperately need noticeboards for our classrooms at Wild Mind Well Being CIC, an alternative provision for young people with social, emotional and mental health needs in High Wycombe.”

These are just five examples from the hundreds of items that have been donated by Urenco. These will have made a huge impact on charities by reducing costs and improving facilities.
