Volunteer spotlight! Meet Shekinah.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
My name is Shekinah. I’m a 25-year-old Public Health (MSc) graduate and a digital marketing/comms professional. I’m passionate about optimising communications in the third sector and I’m working towards becoming a go-to comms expert in this space. I care deeply about work that creates positive social and environmental change, and I’m always curious about how digital solutions can help make that work more impactful.

Why did you choose to volunteer with A Good Thing?
I really liked the idea of an app that benefits both charities and the environment and I liked the very streamlined way A Good Thing does that. When I saw that the role was communications focused, it just made sense. It aligned perfectly with my interests and values, and the direction I want to grow in professionally.

What’s your role as part of the volunteering programme?
I’m a Communications Officer.

What do you hope to learn from your volunteering experience?
All the random things. The ad-hoc things. The behind-the-scenes, nitty gritty stuff that makes comms work in a small and growing team. I also want to learn more about how communications strategies are adapted in real time, and how to balance big-picture goals with day-to-day needs in the third sector.

Tell us about a success you’ve had in the role so far:
I helped with the press release for the charity needs feature, and it was such a delight working with Cathy to bring that to life. From drafting to editing to final approval, the whole process reminded me how something small can still feel really meaningful when it comes together well. It was a great reminder of the value of collaboration and clear communication and it was just really fun to do overall. Working with AGT has been really fun and as rewarding as I expected.
