Fighting period poverty: sanitary products reach more women with A Good Thing

A Good Thing is an online platform that allows businesses to give things away to their local charities. Less to landfill, more to a good cause! The case study below is an example of the wonderful impact that can be made through these matches.

Tesco is a seasoned subscriber to A Good Thing, having been a part of the platform for nearly two years. During this period, its donations have ranged from bowls to plastic ziplock-style bags. And the retailer has a strong dedication to sustainability. Commitments to delivering 300 million meals and reducing emissions are an integral part of its mission.

On this occasion, roughly 5,000 of its sanitary towels moved from its head office in Hertfordshire to Goods for Good, an incredible organisation that focuses on charities located in London and Hertfordshire. Its goal? To collect and redistribute vital everyday items that can help those in need.

Close proximity

Mark Phipps from Tesco told us about how this donation came about:
“At Tesco we provide free sanitary products for staff in our head office toilets. As these items were not individually wrapped, we could not use them – so I decided to donate instead.”

Judy Caiden, Operations Manager at Goods for Good, told us about why this particular donation was so convenient:
“The collection point was very close to our facility, which made arranging collection much easier – I was able to ask a volunteer to collect them for us.”

She went on to share with us the impact that this contribution has had:

“The period product donations we received are absolutely vital – they are essential items, yet many women are struggling to afford them right now. Access to these products directly supports dignity and hygiene, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to pass them on. We have already sent some out to a local foodbank and a family charity, and they have been warmly received.”

Supporting women’s health

Tesco stores are filled with essential everyday products. With each passing year, the prices of sanitary towels rise, making it more challenging for women to purchase them. This is why donations like Tesco’s are so important: they help protect women’s menstrual health while aiding the fight against period poverty.

Tesco’s contribution proves that donations can make an enormous difference. And at A Good Thing, we are proud to be a part of every donation that happens through our platform.
